What Is Long Range Shooting?

If we want to get technical, the collective term “Long Range Shooting” indicates the shooting discipline where the users or more specifically the shooters have to engage their targets at such a greater distance that they need to calculate ballistics, especially taking the wind into account. In long range shooting, you also need to account for wind deflection and gravity drop since the bullet will be on the air for some time.

Now, let me explain it in layman’s terms. Basically, when you shoot a target at a close range, your aim and bullet projectile is more or less perfect or as you have expected it work. However, when you are engaging with a target at a long distance, there are some external factors that affect the bullet’s projectile. Wind deflection and pull due to the gravity are the 2 most affecting factors in this case. To ensure the bullet hits your target, the shooters need to account for wind deflection and gravity to calculate the bullet projectile. Shooting at such a long distance in these situations is typically known as long range shooting.

For training purposes, shooting is categorized into three types based on the range of shooting or the distance between the shooter and the target.

Short range

Shooting range shooting is used to indicate a shooting distance of 300 yards or less.

Long range

If the shooting distance is between 300 and 1200 yards.

Extra long (ELD) range

The ELD range shooting requires the range to be more than 1 mile.

Today, we are only talking about Long Range shooting & rifle scopes. So, the shooting range we will consider for the following discussion is between 300 and 1200 yards.

Popular Long Range Scope Brands

When someone asks me “what is the best long range scope on the market?”, I usually take some time to answer because “the best” long range rifle scope varies from one person to person. However, if I get asked about the best and most popular long range scope brands, immediately few names come to mind. Just from the top of my mind, Vortex, NightForce, Leupold, Nikon – these are the most common and popular Long Range Scope brands.

Despite coming relatively late in the game, Vortex produces some of the best scopes available in the market. Their quality scopes are the result of customer dissatisfaction. The founder of Vortex, husband and wife, were extremely unsatisfied with the quality of scopes they found on the market. So, they basically took it upon themselves to design and manufacture quality scopes within the customer’s budget. Another thing that made Vortex scopes a hit is its customer support mode. Before Vortex came to be, there was no on-demand support for scopes. But under Vortex’s VIP (Very Important Promise) policy, customers can get necessary support or help with their purchases. This is what helped Vortex to plant their feet in the industry.

Due to their manufacturing quality and feature, we’ve put not one, not two, not three, total 4 Vortex riflescopes on today list of best optics for long range shooting. These 4 Vortex optics are –

After Vortex, perhaps the second most recognized long range scope brand is NightForce. When NightForce started its journey in the 90s, their goal was to target the elite military force as their customer like the Navy Seals. However, since then, their range of products increased and more scopes for personal uses were designed, developed, manufactured & shipped to customers.

For long range shooting, we’ve put NightForce Optics 5-20×56 SHV Matte Black Riflescope on our list of the best scope for long range target shooting.

Leupold is the oldest of all the scope companies I’ll be mentioning here. The company itself started in the early 1900s but back then they were merely a manufacturer of survey equipment. Later they expanded their horizon and got involved in the rifle scopes business. The started making rugged, durable and reliable scopes that resist scratch, water and fog, making them perfect for extreme military combats. Their Leupold VX-R 3 – 9x 40 Patrol Riflescope has all these qualities in them and that’s why we’ve put it on our list of best rifle scopes.

Lastly, we are going to mention Nikon. Even though Nikon has made its name with camera gears, their scope and optics game is not so far behind Vortex, NightForce, etc. Their scopes are designed, developed and manufactured to accomplish many feats, especially in long range shooting. Nikon’s precision, zero stop, high speed turrets make their scopes the best precision rifle scope in market. That’s why we’ve put Nikon Buckmasters II 4-12x40mm BDC riflescope in our best value long range rifle scope list.

Apart from Vortex, NightForce, Leupold and Nikon, there are other companies that deserve a shoutout, especially Athlon and Primary Arms since they are the producers of some of the best hunting scopes, best tactical scope, best night vision scope and best sniper scope.

How To Choose A Scope For Long Range Shooting?

Before you choose any scope and come to the conclusion that it is, in fact, the best long range hunting scope or the best high magnification rifle scope, you need to understand how to choose a scope for long range shooting. Here, I will try to explain all the aspects of a scope and help you decide which one is the best.

Decide what type of scope do you want

Variable scope

Variable scopes are the most popular and common type of rifle scopes available in the market. As you’ve guessed by now, they offer variable setups (variable magnification, to be exact) meaning they are appropriate for a number of different situations. In short, the variable scopes can be used in different environments and ensure precision. So, the best scope for 500 yards will also be the best scope for 600 yards if it is a variable scope. That’s why most of the long range rifle scopes are variable scopes.

Fixed scope

Fixed scopes are basically rifle scopes with “fixed” magnification. Even though it might not seem like a practical approach to manufacture fixed scopes, there are many occasions where these can be helpful. For example, if you are an athlete and you always need to shoot at your target at a specific distance, it makes more sense to get a fixed scope. However, they are not ideal for wild hunting or tactical operation since you don’t know how far your target will be in those situations.

Is Eye Relief a deal-breaker for you?

When choosing a scope for long range shooting, you need to ask yourself if Eye Relief a deal breaker or you or not.

A 2-incheye relief is necessary for the safety of comfort when shooting at a long distance. So, you’d want at least this marginal eye relief for comfortable long range shooting experience.

Consider the quality of Lenses

Lenses are the single most crucial components of scope. While a good lens can help you with precision and accuracy, a compromised one will throw you off-guard to an extent.

When you have a good lens at your disposal, you can see the target clearly which makes your aim accurate. But target accuracy is not the only thing that a good lens offers. A good lens also ensures you get the best reading other affecting factors like the wind speed. So, it is important to take lens into account when you are choosing a rifle scope for long range shooting.

Take material of the tube body & body construction in consideration

The premium long range scopes on the market all come in a one-piece body design. That means, there is no one joint in the tube, making it highly durable. Apart from contributing to the integrity, the single-piece construction also makes it waterproof, dust proof and fog proof. However, there are some cheaper long range scopes available on the market and they do not offer such resistance against water, dirt, dust, etc.

Choose the reticle you’re familiar & comfortable with

Reticle is an import factor when choosing a rifle scope. Of all, the duplex reticles are perhaps the most popular and common ones. The Mil-dot and BDC or Bullet Drop Compensator reticle is somewhere at the runner up position.

Know the differences between Front or First Focal Plane (FFP) & Second Focal Plane (SFP)

FFP or First/Front Focal Plane and SFP or Second Focal Plane are the two types of focal planes commonly seen on long range rifle scopes. The main difference between these 2 types of focal plane is the reticle. On the Front Focal Plane or First Focal Plane, the reticle size changes. However, on the Second Focal Plane, the reticle stays constant.

Consider the parallax adjustment parameters

Parallax is basically the ability of your scope to make necessary corrections in regards to your target. In general, the cheaper and low magnification rifle scopes are free of parallax setting. This is because the lower magnification scopes cannot shift when the reticle is too small. However, the best high magnification rifle scope of the market will most definitely offer parallax adjustments since the parallax setting is one of the advantages of owning a high magnification long range rifle scope.

Decide what size of objective lens do you want

The objective lens size or diameter varies scope to scope. So, there is no “perfect” size for long range shooting. That being said, the medium variable scopes are most suitable for long range shooting. Objective lens size or diameter from 40 mmto 44 mm is considered to be the medium variable scope.

What To Look For In a Long Range Scope?

This part will seem a lot like the previous “how to choose a rifle scope for long range shooting”. But there I talked about the factors that come into play while here I am going to explain exactly what to look for in a long range rifle scope –

Variable scope – As you know already, variable scopes are better than fixed scopes when you are targeting at a long-distance and a don’t know how far the target is or will be. That’s why it is best to pick a variable scope for long range shooting.

Eye Relief– A minimum of two-inch Eye Relief is a must for comfortable and secure long range shooting.

Quality lens– The quality of lens should be optimal. Remember, when you to use a cheap lens for long-range shooting, you compromise the Accuracy and Precision of your aim. So, make sure, you are buying a rifle scope that has premium lenses that mean, the length should be scratch resistant, clear and durable.

Single-piece or one-piece body construction– As mentioned earlier, single piece construction or one-piece construction basically means the riflescope is waterproof, dust proof, fog-proof and most importantly, durable. So, make sure the rifle scope you buy has a premium single-piece body or one-piece body construction.

The duplex reticle or Mil-Dot reticle –The bullet drop compensator or BDC reticle is not suitable for long range shooting since they mostly lack the windage holdovers. That’s why it’s suggested that you buy a rifle scope that has a duplex reticle or Mil-Dot reticle.

Front Focal Plane or First Focal Plane (FFP)– Between front focal plane and second focal plane, the former tends to be e more efficient in long range shooting since it offers consistent hash marks & dots.

Parallax adjustment–Many people make the mistake of confusing focus with parallax. They are not the same. Parallax is basically what provides the best view to aim and hit the target. So, parallax adjustment is something you really should consider when buying the perfect long range rifle scope.

Medium variable scopes–As you know already, 40 mm to 44 mm tube size is generally known as medium variable scope tube size. And since these medium variable scopes are best for long distance or long range shooting, I’ll suggest you buy one within this 40-44 mm range.

How To Adjust A Scope For Long-Range Shooting?

For long-range shooting, adjusting scope is very important because tiny errors in short-range firings don’t make an impact, but when it comes to long-range shooting, you may miss the target by miles. So, here’s how to adjust the best long range rifle scopes we listed today for long-range shooting –

Adjusting a Scope for Long-Range Shooting

Mounting – The first step is mounting. It’s to be done before you zero your rifle scope. There’re different ways of mounting your scope, and it depends on the manufacturing process of your rifle. After you mount your scope in your rifle, make sure that you level your scope with your gun.

Zero Your Rifle Scope – The result of your shooting and accuracy mostly depends on zeroing your rifle scope. It’s the process of adjusting the sight of your rifle scope with your rifle. It’s done so that you can hit the dead center of your target. You should zero your rifle scope at a short-range because when you do, other external variables won’t affect the point of impact or POI. But when you zero your target at a long distance, other external variables will affect the POI, and it won’t be a true zeroing. As a result, when you try to hit the long-range target, you won’t be able to hit the dead center.

Adjusting the Eyepiece – Every rifle scope has an eyepiece, and it saves your eye from serious injury while recoiling. An ideal eyepiece won’t interfere with the way of getting a clear image of the target. It’s also important to adjust the eye relief of your scope. Eye relief is the distance from the rifle scope to your eyes, and eye relief varies from person to person. Again, the focus of the eyepiece also important and it varies from person to person. Focusing an eyepiece will ensure you a clear reticle or crosshairs, and as we got older, our focusing power gets weak. That’s why senior shooters have a positive setting on the eyepiece of the rifle.

Bipod/Stand – If you want a steady positioning, a bipod or stand can assist you here. When you are shooting for a long time, it gets tiresome, and you may need stable positioning. In those times, a bipod or stand can help you to hit the target accurately. It’s very important to steady your rifle, especially for long-range shooting.

Practice Shooting – When you finish adjusting your scope, take paper, and place it at a short distance. Then start shooting the paper target. Make adjustments if you’re not able to hit the center of the paper. When you finally hit the mark accurately, shoot the target multiple times. After that, place your aim a little bit further and follow the same procedure. You should hit the center of the target 3 times at least, and move further. This will help you to improve accuracy. Try to increase the range as much as possible. You should target 25 yards at first and then increase the range up to 500 yards to adjust your scope in your rifle.

How To Shoot Long Range With A Scope?

Long-range shooting depends on the rifle you’re using, the scope of the rifle, and the ammunition. So, here is how you can shoot with you can shoot long-range shots with a scope.

Get the Best Long Range Rifle Scope

A good long-range rifle scope is a must when you’re trying to shoot an accurate and long-range target. If you like mountain hunting, you should choose a lightweight rifle and suitable rifle scope. However, you can trust in your old rifle scope but by using a good long-range rifle scope, you can hit the target more accurately.

The ammunition you’re using has a lot to play in long-range shooting. You can do ammunition tests that work best for your rifle. Based on the performance of your ammunition, you should select one and go for hunting.

Adjust the Rifle Scope

It’s the main part when you’re trying to hit a long-range target. Even when you use an old gun, if you’ve got a good rifle scope, you can hit the target accurately. Remember all the best long range scopes in the market won’t be suitable for your gun. Some have a good target, and others have a good turret. Also, some are too heavy for your gun, whereas a few have a good glass but a limited range. So, you should be careful while buying a rifle scope. Also, make sure that your rifle scope has a zero stop mechanism. It’ll help you to hit long-range targets and very essential.

Having a good rifle scope and adjusting it to your rifle is very important. To do that-

At first, zero your rifle scope and set the range to 150 to 200 yards. You should zero your rifle scope 0.75 left from the center because when the bullet rotates, yaw happens. Then, you’ll need to calculate a few data. You can do it by using an app on your smartphone or do it manually. Because when you’re shooting a long-range target, you’ll have to consider air pressure, airflow, the diameter of the bullets, etc.

So, after downloading the app, enter the diameter of the bullets, ballistic coefficient, and velocity of the bullet. After that, you’ll have to enter the environmental data in the app. In this part, you’ll have to enter the temperature and the atmosphere you zeroed your scope. Then, set the barometric pressure to the standard level. After entering all the data in the app or doing it manually, you’ll get the elevation time to hit the target.

After all the calculation, go out for hunting in the wind free day and shoot at a range of 400 to 500 yards. Now, write down the group position compare to the center and repeat it for 900 to 1000 yards range. After that, go back to the calculation or app and adjust velocity until it matches with the chart.

After adjustments, you’ll be able to hit the target accurately. But you’ll have to make sure that you buy the suitable rifle scope for your gun and adjust it according to the bullet and environment.

Tips For Long Range Shooting

To help you with long range shooting, here are some pro tips –

Tip 1 – Set the right balance of Field of View & Magnification

Field of view is basically the area you see from your scope. Not many people realize this but the field of view and magnification are inversely related to each other. Basically what happens is, when you increase the magnification of your scope, the field of view from your scope decreases. So naturally, when people think about long range shooting they think of higher magnification. But by doing so, they decrease their field of view. Thus, it becomes harder to keep track of the target at a long distance since the field of view is so narrow. That’s why it is best to keep a balance between field of view and magnification when you are shooting at a long distance.

Tip 2 – Hold your rifle in a comfortable position

You need to ensure the position that you are in with your rifle is comfortable and secure. Also, when you need to adjust the rifle, simply move your whole body instead of twisting your torso.

Tip 3 – View through scope should be clear

When you are looking through the rifle scope, make sure there is nothing blocking your view. Even an acute amount of Tunnel effect and shadow can cause parallax error. As a result, your aim will be missed. So, make sure any external factors or misalignment of the objective and ocular lens isn’t affecting the view through the scope at all.

Tip 3 – Shoot on the pause

Many shooters and hunters say that an empty chest is the best time to fire a Round. That means, when you exhale and let the air out, you get a 1 to 3-second pause and this is the time to pull the trigger because at that time your body is mostly stable.

Tip 4 – Understand the impact of wind and gravity on bullet’s projectile

Wind deflection and gravity have a certain impact on the projectile of bullet shot from your rifle. Whether it is long range or short range shooting, the impact will always be there. However, for short range shooting, the bullet’s projectile is not that affected because the bullet only stays up on the air for a few microseconds or milliseconds. Also, for short range, the bullet only has to travel a few yards two couple hundred yards. That’s why the percentage of error due to wind deflection and gravity is minimum for short range shooting. That can’t be said for long range shooting. So, you must know how to calculate these external factors into your shots. Only then can you take a precise or accurate shot at your target.

Tip 5 – Know the difference between station pressure and adjusted pressure

When you calculate the ballistics on an app or on a computer program, you need to put some atmospheric data such as the elevation, temperature, etc. But you can avoid putting all those data by simply putting the actual station pressure of your location. The pressure can be measured with Kestrel and other similar devices. But don’t confuse the actual pressure with adjust pressure. Adjusted pressure is what you find in weather apps. These are not actual or absolute. But for the ballistic calculation, you need to use actual pressure or station pressure or absolute pressure, whatever you want to call it.

Tip 6–Choose the best long range rifle scope

This goes without saying but you need to use the best scope for long range Target Shooting if you want optimal performance. To choose the rifle scope for the money, you can check out today’s list.

Why Do You Need A Quality Scope?

At this point, explaining why you need a quality scope for long range shooting is somewhat redundant. I am calling it redundant because in previous parts of this review/buying guide, I have explained what does a long range rifle scope offers. In short, those other things why you need a quality scope for long range shooting. To refresh your memory, you need the long range scopes because –

1. They offer precision or accuracy

2. They make calculating ballistics simpler

3. They increase your chances of hitting a target at a greater distance

4. They provide a crisp and clear field of view so that your target is always within your site

5. They hold up their own against the weather, especially water, dust, dirt, debris and fog.

These are some of the most common and practical reasons why you need equality scope.

However, if you don’t get quality e scope for long range shooting and shoes at a cheap knock off version of premium optics, you will compromise your accuracy, precision and your performance.

There are no “definite” best long distance scopes. “Best” basically varies from person to person, rifle to rifle, condition to condition. I know I am repeating myself but that’s the actual answer of what is the best long distance scope. So, after reading the reviews of the rifle scopes and learning how to choose the right scope for long range shooting, you can now use your own judgment and preferences you decide which of the 10 best long range rifle scope mentioned here suits your need, requirement and condition the most.
