Form and Function

With it’s 2.6” colored screen, reading in the sunlight, or even in the desert is easy.  The screen size is big enough to see exactly what you need to see on your device.  Not too small but just right.

The Garmin’s exterior is coated with a nice durable rubber so that it gives a good grip.  You know it’s not going to fall out of your hands even if it’s wet.  It feels solid and fits just right in your hand.

Just by holding it, you know that it can withstand occasional abuse, and even when you accidentally drop it on the ground, it will still function just fine.

External Antenna

What’s nice about the Garmin 64 series is that they have an external antenna compared to other models.  This is a useful feature if you find yourself in deep canyons, or with heavy brush or foliage over you.  You can be sure that you will still pick up a lot of antennas and get the most accuracy out of your unit.

You should know ATN Thor is a night vision scope with GPS, Wifi and many more features

GLONASS Receiver

This model has the Glonass receiver in it which enables the device to pick up more satellites and give you more accuracy down to about 3 meters, compared to about ten without that technology built-in.

Wireless & Bluetooth Connectivity

Another cool feature of the Garmin 64ST is its wireless connectivity and the capabilities it brings.  If you have friends with another Garmin device that has the same capability, you can wirelessly transfer your routes or GPS tracks, or waypoints from your unit to theirs.

They can then go and experience the same adventure or hike that you did days or weeks ago, or even a year before and see the trail that you had.

The Bluetooth capability lets you pair the device with your smartphone.  It will then notify you of any text message, or voice call coming from your phone.  With it, you only have to mount your Garmin on the handlebar of your motorcycle and keep your phone in your pocket.  That way you are only focused on one device.

While the Garmin 64ST won’t be able to make a call, you will know that someone’s calling and you can always pull out your phone to answer if you think it’s important. The good thing is you don’t need to fumble through and stop each time your phone sends out a notification.

Memory Storage

The device comes built-in with 8 gigs of storage space and 5000 waypoints of storage.  That should be enough but in case you need more, there’s a micro SD slot for additional memory.

Downloadable Apps

You can download an app onto your Garmin 64ST that goes hand in hand with the GPS.  You can pull up different routes and tracks that you’ve already done, or you can delete stuff right from the app.  This just makes the device more user-friendly.

You’ll need internet access to download high-resolution colored maps.

Compass & Altimeter

One thing that you will also appreciate is the compass that the unit has.  It’s a 3-axis compass which means you can hold it flat, vertical, or anywhere in between.  It will still point to the north or whatever direction you set the device in.

The altimeter built into the unit is extremely easy and a useful function especially if you do a lot of mountain hiking or climbing.  It will show your exact altitude to your location.

Birds Eye Satellite Imagery

Your Garmin 64ST comes with a one-year free subscription to their BirdsEye Satellite imagery.  It’s a program you can download on your computer and then you can outline different areas that you’re going to visit.  You can then download it as a satellite view on your device.

What it does is the downloaded satellite view of a particular area you will go to will allow you to see it on your device.  If a pond is near you, it will come up as a satellite image on your GPS.  It is a user-friendly device.  But it is also good to know how to read a topo map and figure out where you’re at on it.

Preloaded TOPO U.S. 100k maps

Your unit also comes preloaded with TOPO U.S. 100k maps.  But you don’t only get this but you also get a marine map and road maps.  You can use the same device for different activities.

Garmin 64st Reviews : Others Special Features

The external buttons on the Garmin 64ST are especially helpful if you will use them during wintertime.  You don’t need to take your gloves off to navigate the screen.  Unlike some GPS that doesn’t have and you need to control it through the touchscreen.

The back of the unit has an opening where you can plug in an external antenna and then a port for the cord that it comes with so you can plug it into the wall charger or your computer.  It also comes with a nice clip that you can attach at the back of the unit, then you can hang it from a backpack or a belt loop.
